The Evolution of the Farmers Market

May 09, 2022 01:03AM ● By Adrienne Ross

In late 2020, the market fell under new ownership. The previous owner wanted to concentrate on their other farmer’s market in Olney, so Jin Stradley partnered with Danny Fleischmann, owner of Full Circle Farm, to take ownership. They originally met at the Olney market when Jin was just thirteen. They partnered to take on Maplelawn’s Farmers Market three years later. Jin, a sophomore in high school, has a savvy business attitude and a passion for the market. He is also enrolled at Montgomery College in Rockville, studying business. Jin used that business acumen to quickly adapt to the ever-changing pandemic landscape by incorporating delivery services, DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Postmates to get fresh produce, meats, and other food to residents. Jin’s infectious, charismatic demeanor opens doors to strong partnerships as well. While Maple Lawn continues to grow and new construction takes root, the market will have a place to call home. Ananda Restaurant has graciously allowed the market use of its ample parking lot, giving it plenty of room to grow. Spring is in the air! The brown, fallow landscape is suddenly verdant and blooming. A local farmer’s market is a great way to emerge from our winter hibernation. Farmer’s markets can fill your kitchen with fresh seasonal produce and help you discover amazing new local artisans. In recent years, Maple Lawn has flourished with its fine eateries, coffee shops, and juice bars, and another fun addition to the community is the Maplelawn Farmers Market, established in 2016.

I am passionate about helping and supporting local businesses and farms.” There are over 20 local vendors offering everything from produce to fresh eggs, meat, artisan breads, coffee, spirits/wine, coffee, and flowers. “We even have a vendor that makes homemade marshmallows!” Jin excitedly added. This year, they have added to the list of local craft goods, jewelry, quilts, candles, soaps, and clothing boutiques. Every week, you can also enjoy some tunes while you shop. The Bach to Rock Music School students will perform at the market. The Maplelawn Farmers Market is one of the only Asian, LGBTQ+ owned and operated markets in Maryland. It is a place where anyone can feel welcome, with a little bit of something for everyone.
