Helping Singles Thrive in 2021 cont..

Columbia Inspired Magazine: What behaviors serve as a warning sign that can alert us that we are not coping well.

Ray Rivers: Remember that happiness is your natural state of being. Your natural physical state is a state of health. Start from that premise – that health and happiness are your birthrights! Specifically, you might be concerned if you notice that you are experiencing:

  • restlessness/trouble sleeping
  • sadness
  • a tight chest, or rapid heart rate/breathing
  • negative or racing thoughts
  • inability to relate to others
  • excessive working or the inability to start working
  • inability to relax or self motivate

These are all signs that you might want to see a therapist.  That being said, give yourself a break. It is totally normal these days to be stressed out. Nobody is ever ‘ready’ for a global pandemic!

CIM: What are some resources for obtaining mental health support?

RR: Columbia is full of amazing therapists, coaches, and healers. The best thing to do is Google and explore. There are literally thousands of us, each with our own unique style. There options for in-person or online visits, insurance, or direct pay. Your options to get world-class help and support are abundant here. The Mental Health Association Crisis Hotline is always there 24/7 to talk about anything, free of charge.

CIM: What are some low-cost local activities that a person could do to improve their mental health here in Columbia?

RR: First of all: Columbia has over 90 miles of trails, lakes, and neighborhood parks. Second of all: The Columbia Association!! I mean, need I say more? Every kind of athletic activity you could think of is available to some degree at CA. Historic Ellicott City is full of charm and activities. Head over to The Columbia Mall,  grab a pretzel and walk around! Finally,  nothing eases the mind and soul like the right yoga studio or routine.

CIM:  What is your parting advice to singles during this difficult time?

RR: This is a chance to discover who you really are, to remember all those parts of yourself that you may have lost. There are interests that you can rediscover, away from the influence of others, away from constant socialization, and school. These things imprint upon us, and when you have this time away from these influences, your true self can begin; your real self can rise to the surface. It is important for all us to pay attention to our mental health. If you are feeling isolated, anxious, and/or simply 'not okay', reach out. We are all in this together.
